As mentioned before, there are certain rules for design. Through the years the rules have changed to be in keeping with design in homes and offices etc. One of the rules that changed over the years was that a design of all one- type of flower was it should always to be used in ‘odd’ numbers (3’s, 5’s, 7’s etc). Then the design rule changed to using 2’s of a flower. Here are some of the different styles used throughout the years.

  1. Triangle-Obviously it was a one-sided bouquet shaped like a pyramid.
  2. Right or left angle- A tall one-sided arrangement balanced yet from the central point of the bouquet going to the right or in an opposite arrangement to the left. A good example would be a bouquet on each side of a mirror pointing in towards each other. They could also but used in just the opposite facing away from each other.
  3. The crescent bouquet-A low half-moon shaped bouquet that brings attention to the container. It is usually arranged in a low oval or oblong container.
  4. Hogarth Curve- An S-shaped bouquet that also allows the container to be the focal point.
  5. Topiary- A round sphere of any one or multiple flowers attached to a pole that has been inserted into a container. Used in wedding or in the entry of one’s home.
  6. Parallel- Generally in a low container and all flowers extend straight up side by side and often grouped as if growing up and out of the container.
  7. Contemporary-Any thing goes type of arrangement. Most of any rules are broken. Very stylized, either very lined or very horizontal. Anything unusual in containers, flowers, ropes, rocks are used. Extremes play a big part in this style.
  8. Phoenix- The accent is on flowers appearing to jettison up from the center of a lower floral bouquet. A style frequently used in hotels and businesses.
  9. Pillowing-A low compact floral bouquet. Flowers are tucked low and tightly together and often used in groups for impact.
  10. Waterfall- An design in which the flowers appear to be falling out of a container whether a ceramic low bowl or basket. Sometimes used up high atop a book case or entertainment center.10. Beidermeier- A design of Dutch influence used in the U.S. It is a very compact bouquet of flowers in used in concentric rings or in spirals. A popular arrangement that is hand tied to free stand as a table top bouquet without a holder.
  11. Wildflower-A loose and airy arrangement-free form using many materials and flowers found in the outdoors.
  12. Oriental-Very stylized bouquet with symbolic meanings for the placement of the flowers.
